entitled

The day you dropped into into skilled hands and took your first breath you were entitled to nourishment, shelter, and the warmth of being held. You cried out demanding comfort. You curled into the arms that held you and began the journey of navigating love.

The heavens cheered at your arrival on earth. The stars shined just a little brighter. The sun beamed in your honor. The birds chirped amongst themselves to spread the news. The trees prepared for the day you would play under them.

However, and I know there's spectrum of this, but I am deeply sorry when the adults around you failed. A million times they came up short and should have chosen you over the decisions they made. They should have stopped and looked around, and realized what was important. You, my love, were important. I weep for you when I imagine the confusion and how love became tainted as life moved along.

I'm proud of you though.

I'm proud of you for going back to hold yourself as that baby and whispering in their ear, "It's going to be okay." I'm proud of you for trusting in the older version of you and how you learned the wholeness of love by first loving yourself.

I'm proud of you for weeding out those who failed you in life, or at least forgiving them and giving them space to hold less of your heart.

You are entitled to love, and knowing that you'll attract the right kind of love from the right kind of people. The person in the mirror deserves the universe, and they will have enough of that magic to spread out wherever they go.
